The Week 10 version of my best college football uniforms list features seven teams that combined for a 5-2 record. The breakdown by brand was four Adidas, two Under Armour, and one Nike uniform set. Uni Bowl #4 was brought to us this weekend thanks to the American Athletic Conference, and the winner for best uniform combination came from a road team. Read the article from Week 9 here. Who made the list this week?
Uni Bowl #4 happened Saturday afternoon between the #6 Cincinnati Bearcats and Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Nippert Stadium was the site of ESPN’s College Gameday due to Cincinnati’s College Football Playoff aspirations, but a one-possession win over three-win Tulsa might not earn them any love from the voting committee this week. The Bearcats are trying to make the CFP for the first time. It’s the first appearance for either team on the best college football uniforms list, however.
The Bearcats like to play around with their red, black, and white colors for various uniform combinations. This week, the settled on black helmets with red jerseys and pants. Even with black accessories, the numbers and letters and on their tops were white, which I believe was the far better option than black.
Tulsa, on the other hand, went with a two-color combination of white and blue. Three things caught my eye in this set: the shiny blue facemask, the “HURRICANE” going up the sides of the pants, and the subtle double outline of the numbers. The outline of the blue numbers uses some blank white space before a thin strip of blue was about half an inch beyond the number boundary. Some really nice uniforms from Tulsa, and the nation should give them some credit for hanging in there against a top-10 team on the road.
I mentioned in the list from week six that Kent State’s uniforms reminded me of the LA Chargers of the old days. This week, they looked like the Chargers of today, opting for a powder blue jersey, white pants, and a white helmet with a yellow facemask. I don’t know if they have ever worn a powder blue jersey before. The uniforms were great, but I think this is the one time where I want to talk about the gameplay more than the attire. The Wednesday night game ended 52-47, and there were some ridiculous stat lines. There were 1,385 total offensive yards, and NIU quarterback threw for 532 with 309 of them going to Trayvon Rudolph. Kent State’s Marquez Cooper ran for 173 and two touchdowns. Weekday MACtion never fails, ladies and gentlemen.
The Troy Trojans defeated South Alabama 31-24 Saturday night in a large rivalry game that leaves both teams sitting at 5-4. These Troy uniforms were really cool. They used a silver chrome and black gradient for their helmets that even bled into their facemasks. I thought that was a super cool touch to differentiate themselves from any other blackout uniforms that has been on the field this year.
On what would have been Pat Tillman’s 45th birthday, the Sun Devils went with a yellow on yellow on yellow uniform combination as they played host to the USC Trojans. In week four, ASU debuted a new Reverse Retro jersey, and they wore them again this week. Only this time, they paired yellow pants with it to give off some serious mustard vibes. Or sun vibes? Their helmets featured a digital camo shield with “PT 42” on it, because ASU takes any opportunity they get at celebrating Tillman – as they most definitely should. Rachaad White channeled his inner hero by rushing for 202 yards and three touchdowns in the Sun Devils’ 31-16 win.
In a rare Big 12 game that saw just 27 total points scored, Oklahoma State take the crown as wearing the best college football uniforms of week 10. These are just beautiful. Orange and black go so unbelievably well together it should be illegal. Again, their collar design is money, and the subtle silver “COWBOYS” going up the orange pants is really cool. Also, don’t forget Pistol Pete on the right hip. Need anything else? Oh yeah, how about the white script of Cowboys on the orange helmet WITH a dual-color stripe down the center? White accessories were the icing on the cake for the road game against West Virginia. I think I want to put the Cowboys on the list every week from now on, and I’m surprised this is only their second appearance.
The one-loss Aztecs traveled to Honolulu and beat the Rainbow Warriors 17-10. Hawaii busted out a Pearl Harbor themed set in honor of the upcoming 80th anniversary of the infamous bombing and 1941 Hawaii football team that went 8-1 on the year. Their grey pants featured the date of the attack, “12.7.41,” and a message reading, “…WILL LIVE IN INFAMY.” Their black helmets had the green block H one side and the outline of the Hawaiian Islands on the other.
Which school do you think had the best college football uniforms from week 10?
