Ben McAdoo Actually Still Believes In Sam Darnold

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo made some…interesting remarks during a Tuesday press conference. When asked if he thought that Sam Darnold would be the starting quarterback, he answered yes. What’s interesting about that, is he would backtrack a little by saying “that is something I shouldn’t have said”. But when you look at this roster, one that’s only quarterbacks under contract are Darnold and P.J. Walker, I guess that has to be a default answer. The Panthers have the 6th pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and many people expect the team to take a quarterback at some point.

If you ask Ben McAdoo, though, he isn’t fully out on the former USC quarterback.

Full quote via PFT via NBCSports.com:

“Sam was one of the people that intrigued me for the job. Sam does have some magic in his game,” McAdoo said, via David Newton of ESPN.com.

The Carolina Panthers traded for Sam Darnold during the off-season last year, and it’s safe to say that investment did not work out in their favor. During his first year with the team, he went 4-7 with just over 2,500 yards, throwing for 9 TDs and 13 INTs. He started out HOT through the first three games of the season, leaving hope that this experiment would work and all he needed was to leave the New York Jets. Safe to say that was quickly proven wrong.

Still, Sam Darnold is only 24 and has a lot of time ahead of him. He already has four years of NFL experience in him and some still hold out hope that he can develop into a starting-caliber NFL quarterback. But if things don’t change in a hurry, or the Panthers decide to shoot on one of these draft prospects, that time might just be up.
