The Ben Johnson Hype Train Has Become Comical

I’m just going to say something. Maybe I regret saying this down the road but it still needs to be said. I’m pretty sick and tired of this Ben Johnson hype machine to the point where it’s becoming comical.

Sorry, not sorry, but I just don’t respect anyone who says they want Ben Johnson to be their head coach.

Did you interview him?

What about his scheme makes you feel confident that he will become a successful head coach?

What are Ben Johnson’s beliefs in terms of building a program?

You know what the answer will be from those people? They won’t have an answer.

Look, I’m not trying to hate on Ben Johnson, but you people need to calm down. It takes way more than being a good play caller to be a quality head coach. Johnson very well might get a head coaching job. It sure as hell doesn’t mean that he’s going to be good at it. Nor should anyone have confidence in it.

Maybe Johnson will be a good head coach. Certainly possible. Jared Goof has played well and Johnson deserves credit for that. I just think you’re totally out of your mind if a guy like Johnson steps into that Chargers job and fixes things over night. Teams like that need a program builder. Not just a single minded play caller.

There are reports out there that Johnson wants $15 million to become a head coach. I’ll drop $15 million for a head coach, but not him. Jim Harbaugh is a proven program builder. That’s what teams should be looking for in their next head coach. Johnson may very well become a good head coach but it’s impossible to know. Anyone who says they know is lying to themselves.
