Barry Trotz Calls The Predators A ‘Fantasy Hockey’ Team

The Predators were busy this Summer. I think everyone is aware of that by now. They blew all of their money on free agent signings that included Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei. Preds head honcho Barry Trotz knows his team hasn’t won anything yet. He compared Nashville to a fantasy hockey team until they prove they’re more than that.

“On paper, we look like a good team in fantasy hockey. … I told the players, it’s fantasy hockey until we become a good team,” he said Thursday, according to 102.5 The Game’s Max Herz.

“Everybody’s talking about expectations,” he said, according to Herz. “Let’s just win a round. … Once you got past that first series, it becomes real.”

The executive continued: “To me, you’ve got three really good pieces (in Roman Josi, Filip Forsberg, Juuse Saros). … I think we have a few and I tried to add a couple and make us a threat. I know our culture is great.”

Do we like Trotz’s approach here? I guess it’s a good thing to not buy into your own Kool-Aid. The job of a gm is to worry and to prepare for the worst-case scenario. Nothing is guaranteed for Nashville and the truth of the matter is, this team is very old and they just got older. The wheels could fall off this thing before it even gets off the rails.

Are we sure this team is going to be good, good? It seems like Trotz just wants a round one playoff victory for the first year of this new squad. I’m just not sure why you spend all that money on older vets if you’re okay with that result.
