We are days away from Aaron Judge breaking the American League single season home run record. Roger Maris has the record with the Yankees hitting 61 in 1961. Judge needs just two more home runs to break that record.
Of course, Barry Bonds is the current single-season record holder with 73 bombs. Judge is unlikely to catch Bonds but I’m not sure anybody ever will. With Judge closing in on Maris’ record, Bonds had some surprising comments in the media. Bonds has made it clear he wants to Giants to land Judge in free agency.
“I hope he signs here,” Bonds told Bloom. “Can it happen? I don’t know. It depends on what the Yankee payroll is. But we would love to have him, I’ll tell you that.
“We in the Bay Area — he’s a Bay Area boy — we hope they don’t sign him, and we can get him. I would. He’s that good.”
Will the Giants make a play for Judge? On some levels, it does make some sense. They have a pretty open payroll and all indications point to San Francisco being aggressive without naming names. The Giants core that won those championships many years ago is gone and it’s a fairly clean slate. San Fran could be big players for the hot names on the market.
Judge will have other suitors too. New York obviously wants to make him a Yankee for life. You never know with Steve Cohen’s wallet. Even the Red Sox could be in the mix.
