I guess Joe Sakic, Chris McFarland, and the rest of the Avalanche front office weren’t lying. After the trade with San Jose to bring in MacKenzie Blackwood, they’ve already hammered out an extension after just a handful of games being in Colorado.
The Avalanche team account was the first to reveal the news. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet later jumped in with the dollar amount for the extension. It’s a five-year extension that will carry an AAV of $5.25 during the duration of the deal.
Blackwood, 28, has a .931 SV% during his first four games with the club. He’s also been helpful in fantasy hockey for team Trey so I thank him for his services thus far. That first impression seems to have convinced Colorado to go ahead with the extension. They did give up a second round pick here so it makes far more sense to keep him around if he actually will serve as a long term solution.
The underlying metrics have been positive this year too. He looks like a totally different guy than the one who was unplayable with the Devils.
The Thunder Bay, Ontario is now the guy in Colorado. Scott Wedgewood was also brought in via trade with the Predators who will likely serve as the backup this year and next year. For better or worse, the Avs are locked into this tandem for the foreseeable future.
Colorado wasn’t the only team trying to reel in Blackwood from the Sharks. The Hurricanes were a major player here too. Now Blackwood won’t even make it to free agency after this new shiny contract extension.
