The Houston Astors are closing in on a deal to bring in premier First baseman Jose Abreu. The contract is rumored to be for 3 years. MLB insider Bob Nightengale was the first to break the news.
Abreu, who won AL MVP back in 2020 will be a huge addition to an Astros team fresh off a World Series win. First Base was and has been a position of weakness for them for years, but the addition of Abreu should finally fill that void.
In an offense that already has the likes of Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman. Bringing in a guy who’s driven in over 100 runs in 6 of his last 9 years just doesn’t seem fair.
And while Abreu is now 35 and has seemingly lost that elite power he once had. He’s still shown he can be a great bat by posting a slash line of .304/.378/.446 while driving in 75 runs.
And again, while Jose Abreu has seemed to lose a step in terms of the power department. The elite lineup the Astros already boast should better protect him and allow him to do the things he does best. Getting on base, and driving in runs.
They say the rich get richer, and this move fully encapsulates this saying. Although they are fresh off a title, the Astros understand that if you aren’t getting better then you’re getting worse. And this move should certainly make the Astros better as they look to reload and make a run at the title again next year.
