What kind of fantasy impact will Ashton Jeanty make as a rookie? Right now, he’s being hyped up to a place that we haven’t seen in a long time. I’ve already been questioning if the talent is as real as everyone is pretending it is. Now rumors are dropping that Pete Carroll might not even make him a true workhorse RB.
The new Raiders head coach came right out and said it. He’s not just leaning on Jeanty. The other backs on the roster are going to get plenty of opportunities as well.
“I love having multiple guys play,” Carroll told reporters Thursday at the conclusion of the team’s mandatory minicamp. “I’m not relying on one guy, you know.”
“They’re gonna show us that, you know,” he said, “when they get their chance to compete.”
Yes, Jeanty is probably going to get a good chunk of the work, but how big of a piece of the pie are we actually talking about? If Carroll turns this into a real committee, Jeanty is being WAY overdrafted right now. It reeks of the Bijan Robinson flashbacks, where Tyler Allgeier just ate too much of the pie to make Bijan a monster as a rookie. Bijan finished RB17 as a rookie, and I’d argue he’s a better talent than Jeanty is.
Don’t worry. Chip Kelly also hates Jeanty’s stance and is demanding that he change it. It may take time to just adjust the running style if we’re being real.
Raheem Mostert, Sincere McCormick, Zamir White, and Dylan Laube are the other running backs on the roster. Time will tell who else Carroll leans on in that backfield. It’s also certainly possible that those other guys totally fail and Jeanty’s workload shoots up because of it. Time will tell.
