Ashley Hatch is off the US Women’s National Team Roster for the remainder of the Concacaf Championship. In the July 7 game against Jamaica, Hatch strained a muscle in her left leg, removing her off from the roster for the time being. Replacing her is midfielder Sam Coffey.
Coffey, a midfielder for the Portland Thorns, has never appeared in a USWNT match. She joined the team for training camp and was rostered for the friendly against Columbia (alongside other new USWNT player Carson Pickett), but ultimately left off of the 23-player roster for the Concacaf championship. Ashley Hatch, a 5’9” forward for the Washington Spirit, is relatively more experienced, having appeared in 11 matches for the USWNT, with 4 goals and 1 assist.
Sam Coffey played first at Boston College, where she was named ACC Midfielder of the Year. She then transferred to Penn State University in 2019, and was named First Team All North Region and First Team All Big Ten in her time there. Coffey was drafted to the Thorns in 2021, selected as the 12th pick in the 2nd round.
The US is currently sitting in first place of Group A, which includes the US, Jamaica, Haiti, and Mexico. The USWNT won all three of their group matches. They defeated Haiti 3-0, Jamaica 5-0, and Mexico 1-0 last night with a literal last-minute goal from Kristie Mewis. Coffey will join the team for the semi-final round on July 15th.
Coffey adds depth to the midfield for the USWNT. She is listed alongside Lindsey Horan, Taylor Kornieck, Rose Lavelle, Kristie Mewis, Ashley Sanchez, and Andi Sullivan. This is a big opportunity for Coffey, giving her the chance to prove her worthiness to the national team going forward.
