Arizona Coyotes in talks with ASU over a temporary home

The Arizona Coyotes’ chances of finding a new home in Arizona were looking grim, but they may have found their temporary home for the 2022-23 NHL season.

According to Craig Morgan with PHNX Sports, the Coyotes are in talks with Arizona State University about potentially using the new multi-purpose stadium for the next three to four seasons while they find or build a permanent place to play.

The new arena in Tempe, AZ is set to be the home for ASU Sun Devil hockey as well as wrestling and gymnastics. ASU is planning on beginning to use the unnamed arena in the fall of 2022.

This news is a relief for Coyotes’ fans since just a few months ago the City of Glendale announced that they would no longer allow the Coyotes to play at Gila River Arena and more recently the team is in a discussion with the City of Tempe about wanting to build a new $1.7 billion arena in Tempe. This is looking unlikely as the board is likely to vote against the plan.

It will be interesting to see how well the multi-purpose arena can host a professional hockey team. That is in part to the fact that it only holds 5,000 which is 12,000 seats less than Gila River Arena. This would also have the Arizona Coyotes playing at the smallest arena in the entire NHL 10,000 seats less than the current smallest arena, Canada Life Centre, home of the Winnipeg Jets.

There are very few other options for the Coyotes at the moment following a story that came out in December claiming that the Coyotes owed the City of Glendale $1.3 million in unpaid taxes and were close to being locked out of the arena they have called home since 2003.

The only other option to keep the Coyotes in Arizona, but is unlikely to be more than talk, is to have them play at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. Otherwise, the idea of relocation is a legitimate possibility with Houston being the front runner followed by Quebec City.
