Ariel Helwani, the well known UFC analyst for ESPN, announced on Sunday that he will be leaving ESPN. Helwani announced on his Twitter that his last day at ESPN will be June 15th.
For die hard MMA fans, this is sad news. Ariel Helwani has been the cornerstone of ESPN’s UFC coverage for 3 years, and shows like Ariel and The Bad Guy and DC and Helwani have become staples in my daily consumption of MMA content. Helwani is widely beloved by UFC fighters, coaches, referees, and fans around the world.
While Helwani did not give any explicit details about what is next in his future, he did say that there would be more news in the coming days and weeks. I think I speak for all UFC fans when I say that I hope Ariel Helwani continues to be the pinnacle of excellence in UFC media.
Not only was Helwani the go to guy in the UFC at ESPN, but he also dabbled in the NBA. He was a sideline reporter for summer league games a few years ago.
While I do not know Ariel personally, obviously, he seems like the definition of class. Whether he is cracking jokes with Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen or interviewing Conor McGregor, he always seems to draw you in.
For me personally, Ariel has been a driving force in my love of the UFC, and I wish him nothing but the best in the future. Hopefully, UFC 263 can be as good as advertised to help send Helwani off in the way he deserves.
