Many critics and writers had the Yankees as frontrunners to take the AL East before the season began, and most believed the pennant would come down to them and the White Sox. However, it has not exactly been smooth sailing for the pinstripes, and although New York’s odds to win the league were -220 then, they are now -110, and no matter how well the Yankees play, either the Red Sox or the Rays continue to outpace them.
This is how the standings look as of today:
Both the Rays and the Red Sox have been playing well, as Tampa Bay has won 13 of their last 14, and Boston has more often than not been atop the standings since the beginning of the season. Not to mention that the Blue Jays can turn it on at any point as well.
Over the last two weeks, multiple Yankees have been placed on the IL. Aaron Hicks is out for the season, and Luke Voit and Corey Kluber will be out for a couple of months. On the bright side, Giancarlo Stanton is returning from injury tonight, so the lineup will be getting some much-needed firepower back. The Yankees should take the division handily if the team can stay healthy, although that has not happened in recent years as the Yankees have had notorious troubles with injuries.
This season has proven that the AL East is one of the most competitive divisions in baseball. If the Yankees stay healthy and continue to pitch well, the AL East will have their name written all over it, but if each AL East team vying for first place continues their impressive play, nobody can guarantee that the Yankees end the season on top of the division.
