Have the Reds changed their stance on possibly trading Jonathan India? Before it was talk about how they felt no need to move India. Now… we might be getting a different tune.
The Reds have a ton of infield depth. Not a lot of pitching depth. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com has suggested that the Reds could move the former Florida product to beef up the pitching staff.
Cincinnati is loaded with infielders. Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand are already on the big league team. Encarnacion-Strand just got promoted. That’s not even including Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, and Cam Collier. The two earlier names were acquired in the Luis Castillo deal. The only problem is Castillo is exactly the type of guy this Reds team needs right now.
India, 26, is currently slashing .251/.338/.411 with 14 homers, 51 RBIs, 12 steals, and an OPS+ of 98. Cincinnati sits 55-47 on the season and just a half game out of a wildcard spot. Moving India for reliable pitching could be the difference between making the postseason and missing out.
The Reds can obviously remain patient. The most fascinating part of this team prior to the season was Joey Votto predicting an alien invasion. A few months later, the Reds are buzzing with some of the most exciting young talent in the sport. Given how good Elly De La Cruz is, maybe buying is the right call.
