Is Antonio Brown smarter than we think he is? After a wild offseason which ended up being released by the Raiders, Antonio Brown found a home rather quickly. Brown has signed a deal with (wait for it) the New England Patriots.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The funniest part of this whole story is the Patriots play the Steelers in Week 1. Can’t even make that up. Now Brown can’t play in Week 1 because he was released. Brown is eligible to suit up Week 2. Still, I’m sure Brown has some secrets to share about the Steelers. Still, I know Tom Brady is happy today. Losing Gronk doesn’t feel like a big deal anymore.
What if Antonio Brown was just playing us? What if someone from the Pats called him and said “look man, just act like a total fucking moron. Find a way to get cut. Then we will sign you”. Just like that, Brown is on the Patriots. Unreal. The Pats have done this before. If Brown can be like Moss, this is a win. If he is another Chad Ocho Cinco, see the door buddy. Brown knows he might not get another chance either if he turns into a meatball with the Patriots.
I’m serious. What if he was just acting like a crazy person just because he didn’t want to be part of the Raiders? Maybe he knew the Patriots were the move the whole time.
After an offseason where we were worried about New England’s weapons, they now have Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, and Antonio Brown. Have to believe that Belichick can keep them in check. If not, they will see the door. Randy Moss couldn’t make it in Oakland either. Moss was unstoppable with New England. The Antonio Brown deal has a similar feel to it. Brown is still one of the best receivers in football. Brown reeled in 104 catches for 1,297 yards and 15 touchdowns. That was in 15 games too.
Oakland can’t do anything right. They have now given up valuable draft picks for Randy Moss, Martavis Bryant, and Brown and got basically zero production.
We do have an update with the contract. Brown will sign a one year deal worth $15 million. That was reported by Mike Florio of PFT. Let’s be honest. We already know how this story ends. Patriots win the Super Bowl. Brown has a monster season and is a model citizen in the locker room. Brown signs a big deal in free agency with someone else. Patriots collect 3rd round compensatory pick.
