Antoine Griezmann Headed Back to Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid have finalized a deal with Barcelona that will see Antoine Griezmann return to the club, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. The move will be a loan until June of 2022, with a buy option of €40 million on the table if Atletico and Diego Simeone want the French star’s future services.

The French international scored 20 goals and assisted on an additional 12 for FC Barcelona last season. The 30-year-old joined Atletico in the summer of 2014 and played with the club for five seasons. In that time, Griezmann registered 133 goals and 44 assists for the club.

Although there was speculation concerning a possible player swap involving João Felix between Barca and Atletico, Felix will be staying with the latter club. With the 21-year-old Portuguese youngster off the market, Barcelona is expected to target Dutch striker Luuk de Jong in the waning hours of the transfer window, according to Romano.

Griezmann had a somewhat frustrating tenure with Barcelona. While his numbers were not poor, some fans and pundits alike expressed their displeasure with his performances, especially with the €120 million price tag attached to his transfer. That pressure, as well as playing second fiddle to Lionel Messi, could have certainly led to the Frenchman asking for a transfer this summer.

A return to Atletico for Griezmann means a fresh start in a familiar place. It will be interesting to see how immediate his introduction will be with the Spanish giants, and what that means for the other attackers including Felix, Luis Suárez and Ángel Correa.
