Trying to understand the Indianapolis Colt’s thought process is like trying to understand quantum mechanics, it just doesn’t make any damn sense. Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Indy has officially reinstated Anthony Richardson as their starting QB for this Sunday’s game against the New York Jets after being benched in favor of Joe Flacco for two games.
In those two games, the Colts lost to the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings, two teams that both look destined for a playoff berth. Apparently, losing those two games to two good teams was not acceptable in Indianapolis, so they benched Flacco. This raises the question: why did they bench Richardson in the first place? If you were going to lose these two games, why not lose them with Richardson? Listen, I like Joe Flacco as much as the next guy, but the Colts are getting nothing out of playing him. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose with Richardson right now as long as he is developing. The franchise has no future with Flacco, and it’s frustrating seeing them flounder like this, being stagnant as a team.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen simply doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t know if the team should try to compete with Flacco (which is ironic because they keep losing) or be bad with Richardson, but at least in that scenario, you are getting somewhere. You are determining whether or not Anthony Richardson is going to be your QB of the future or not, which is very important information to figure out.
Richardson seems to have learned something during his two-week vacation on the bench. Per ESPN, he stated, “ I think these two weeks have definitely opened my eyes and allowed me to take a deeper dive and look into myself and see what I’m made of…so, I’m thankful for these past two weeks and I’m low-key thankful that it happened.”
It’s hard to believe Anthony Richardson feels happy about his benching, but it could end up being a good thing in the long run. Hopefully, he can turn his play around, as, before his benching, Richardson was not performing well at all.
