Anthony Rendon to undergo wrist surgery, will miss rest of season
Los Angeles Angels infielder Anthony Rendon will undergo right wrist surgery next week and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Friday.
Rendon spent two weeks on the injured list in late May and early June with wrist inflammation and re-aggravated the injury four games into his return Tuesday. He’s missed each of the last two games and it was determined Friday to perform the subsequent surgery.
Rendon, 32, caps off 2022 with five home runs and 24 RBIs, sporting a .228/.324/.383 (707 OPS; 104 OPS+) slash line with 10 doubles, 23 walks (12.2 BB%) and 32 strikeouts (17.0 K%). His walk rate marked the fourth-best of his career while his strikeout rate is the fourth-worst.
This will be Rendon’s second-straight season that’s been cut short to injury; last year, he suffered a hip injury that led to season-ending hip surgery. Though he already had multiple lower-body injuries, limiting him to 58 games — the fewest of his career in a 162-game season — where he slashed .240/.329/.382 (.712 OPS; 95 OPS+) with six home runs and 34 RBIs.
After leading the NL in doubles (44) while topping MLB in RBIs (126) in his final season with the Washington Nationals in 2019, Rendon has yet to find a really good groove with Los Angeles after inking a seven-year, $245 million contract prior to the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. He was good in 2020, tallying nine homers and 31 RBIs with a .286/.418/.497 (915 OPS; 150 OPS+) — which would equate to 28 HRs and 97 RBIs over an 162-game span — though hasn’t been able to produce over a full season due to injuries.
