As much as the delusional Lakers fanbase believes everyone wants to be on the Lakers and are stupid for leaving, that might be the case here. Oddly enough, Anthony Davis hasn’t committed to the Lakers after this season, despite his contract expiring. He just declined a contract extension with the Lakers, which was expected. Instead of signing 4 years with the Lakers, he could sign for 5 years with the Lakers, or another team, for more money. But the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that the chances AD stays could be on the decline.
Before you think that I am crazy, hear me out. Lebron is 35. He is playing fantastic, but for how long? Lebron is human and father time is certain, his game will start to decline soon enough. Does Anthony Davis really want to commit to this team without a clear set plan in mind? Granted, they have quite a bit of money that is expiring in a legendary 2021 Free Agency class, so their plan could be set on that. That includes having Lebron’s player option that year. If AD commits long-term, Lebron could leave him, given his history. That does free up a lot of money for the Lakers, but it does leave some uncertainty for the Anthony Davis and the Lakers.
Also, I reported an article about Anthony Davis hinting at signing with the Bulls after this offseason. Chicago is Anthony Davis’ hometown, so it’s not as far-fetched as it seems. I’m sure there are plenty of teams on Anthony Davis’ radar and vice-versa. Leaving Los Angeles could be the best decision for him, but it is too soon to tell. I can tell you one thing though: outside of Lebron and AD, this Lakers team is garbage. I talked about this with Garrett Burroughs on the debut episode of The ChicksTape Podcast. While at first glance, staying with the Lakers seems like a good idea, is it?
There’s so much riding on this season for the Lakers. Can Lebron and Anthony Davis alone carry this team to a championship in a competitive Western Conference? What happens if they can’t? Lebron isn’t getting any younger and his decline is inevitable. You can’t make the “He’d be the face of the franchise” argument for the Lakers because that is true for about 25 teams in the NBA. In my honest opinion, it is championship or bust for the Lakers. If the Lakers don’t win a championship, Anthony Davis doesn’t have any reason to stay in LA and the Lakers team won’t make significant improvements over the offseason. I’d be worried if I was the Lakers, but that is just me.
