The Boston Celtics came away with a lot of players during the 2019 NBA Draft. Personally, I was torn on it on draft day but I started to buy in a little. Boston netted Romeo Langford, Grant Williams, Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters in the draft. They also signed Tacko Fall and Vincent Poirier too. So far, there have been mixed reviews on the group. I guess that’s to be expected since rookies rarely make an immediate impact outside of 3-4 players each year.
An anonymous scout hammered the Celtics rookie class. Keith Smith of SB Nation’s Celtics Blog did an article on scouts and executives takes on the Celtics roster. I’m not sure how credible the blogger is but it’s an interesting read. Anyway, this take from the scout is something.
“I think they stink. Well, that’s a little harsh. I mean they’re fine, but there isn’t anyone special in the whole bunch. Williams is a backup role player for his whole career. That’s fine, but whatever. The Indiana kid (Langford) can’t shoot. How can you be a shooting guard if you can’t shoot? Carsen Edwards will be a G-League All-Star for years.
The best of the bunch is Tremont Waters. He can play. I think he’s eventually a pretty good backup point guard. So, great. A bunch of backups. You need backups, but none of these guys are special.”
It’s so hard to know what you’re getting. I think more than anything, scouting in the NBA is the toughest. Grant Williams always felt like a high energy guy that if you’re lucky is the next Draymond. Romeo Langford I’ve hated from the start. I actually think he might make it though. It’s Carsen Edwards I’m the most disappointed in.
Edwards was really good at Purdue and carried them deep in the tournament making crazy shots. He went to the NBA and has looked like a lost puppy dog. A reminder maybe 2 second round picks every year turn into anything.
I’ll never forget when the Celtics drafted Semi Ojeleye. I was so excited. Watch this highlight.
What the fuck happened to this guy? The hair is gone, I’ve never once seem him throw down a dunk, and he’s never once looked intimidating getting hype with the Celtics. He’s been a corner 3 ball shooter and solid on ball defender. That’s it. NOTHING else. A reminder. Most guys in the NBA Draft do nothing. Let’s hope the Celtics 2019 rookie class isn’t a total flame out.
