Noah’s arch doesn’t have anything on Nolan Schanuel. 40 days. Literally 40 days. That’s all it took.
The Los Angeles Angels are promoting first base prospect Nolan Schanuel. The promotion comes 40 days after the Angeles selected the FAU product during the 2023 MLB Draft.
Peter Gammons was the first to report the news:
Jack Sabin did a great job breaking down some of these MLB prospects prior to the Draft. Even NBC Sports showed their proper respect. If you want Jack’s breakdown on Schanuel, you can read that here.
This promotion was well deserved but it’s also an act of desperation. Shohei Ohtani is set to hit unrestricted free agency this upcoming offseason. LA needs its best players on the field right now even if they’re not 100% ready.
Also, keep in mind that the Angels traded for CJ Cron at the deadline. It’s not exactly like first base was a black hole for the rest of the season. The Angels are 60-62 on the season and sit seven games out of a wildcard spot. The Angels can do what they want but this promotion isn’t going to get them into the postseason.
Schanuel, 21, has done nothing but tear the cover off the ball in the minors. In 21 minor league games, Schanuel slashed .370/.510/.493. That’s while sporting a batting line of .447/.615/.868 this past year for FAU. Schanuel has a chance to become one of the better hitting first basemen around the league.
Interesting side not that I also want to mention. The Angels are winning at one thing. They are the current champions at promoting recent draft picks.
