The Angels Actually Needed Gerrit Cole

The Angels are the team that actually needed Gerrit Cole. Once again, they are screwed. (Frank Franklin II/Associated Press)

The pressure is on in Angel land. They have had Mike Trout on their roster since 2011 and have not won a single playoff game. The Angels should have or should trade Mike Trout but we know that’s not going to happen. The Angels better win now or will just continue to waste what is maybe the best player ever. If the Angels don’t sign Gerrit Cole, they’re better off just getting rid of the franchise. They have no choice. Except, it didn’t happen and Cole is a Yankee.

The Angels need pitching. They don’t have a pitcher on their 40 man roster worth more than my pinky toe. Last year, they opened the season with Trevor Cahill and Matt Harvey as their one-two punch. That’s so pathetic. If the Angels actually want to win, they needed Gerrit Cole. They don’t just need Cole. The Angels need Cole and about 5 more arms on top of him.

LA is all in now. They recently made a trade to clear payroll. They shipped Zack Cozart and his ugly contract (two years remaining for $12.66 million per year) to the Giants. They didn’t just clear his salary. They gave up Will Wilson to do so. For a team that has had an ugly farm system forever, they gave up the player they just took in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. They gave up the 15th pick in the draft just to clear money. What’s the point in the Angels having a team? Giving up a premium prospect so that they just don’t sign their biggest need?

The Angels are a bad baseball team. LA just won 72 games and finished in 4th place in a tough AL West. Why is that team giving up prospects to then not land Cole. Figure it out, Angels. You pushed your chips to the center. Now it’s time to land somebody. Cole was their big fish and they whiffed.
