Last week, LSU Women’s Basketball sophomore forward Angel Reese set a school record with her 20th consecutive double-double, breaking legend Sylvia Fowles’ record of 19 straight. Reese has since extended her streak to 21 with an 18-point, 17-rebound performance against Tennessee. 21 games, 21 double-doubles. Angel Reese cannot be stopped.
Reese was always a productive player at Maryland. Her first season in College Park, she averaged 10 points and six rebounds over 15.1 minutes per game. She followed that up with 17.8 points and 10.6 rebounds over 25.9 minutes per game in her second season. Those are very good numbers, but she’s really popped off since transferring to LSU.
This season, Angel Reese is averaging 23.4 points and 15.6 rebounds per game, marks which rank fifth and second in the country, respectively. The Baltimore native is also shooting 55.3% from the field. Since 2009-10, only two other women have had an individual season averaging at least 20 and 15 on 50% shooting: Oregon’s Jillian Alleyne in 2013-14 and Cal’s Kristine Anigwe in 2018-19. Angel Reese is the only one of that group with a positive assist/turnover ratio. She’s been a stellar combination of day-to-day consistency – as evidenced by her double-double streak – and explosive performance. On January 5, perhaps Reese’s best game of the season, she scored 26 points and pulled down 28 boards in a 40-point win over Texas A&M.
Anyone who doesn’t have Angel Reese as one of the favorites for National Player of the Year isn’t paying attention. LSU Women’s Basketball is 21-0 this season and ranked No. 3 in the country. The Tigers are one of two remaining undefeated teams and share the SEC lead with 21-0 No. 1 South Carolina.
