Andrei Kuzmenko gave up waffles and chocolate to cut during summer

Vancouver Canucks forward Andrei Kuzmenko has found an interesting way to slim down during the NHL offseason–cutting out all waffles and chocolate from his diet.

“Last season was so bad for me, my weight,” he said this week, according to Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre. “Now, I lose weight. Last summer, I (ate) a lot of waffles.”

Kuzmenko has been a quiet star for the Canucks in the midst of a poor time in their franchise. Last season, as a rookie, he played all but one regular season game for Vancouver, lighting the lamp 39 times and adding 35 assists.

Kuzmenko, who signed a two-year, $11 million extension with the team in January, may not be the tallest guy on the ice, but certainly knows his diet is out of place. Standing at 5-foot-11, the Russian-born forward weighs in at almost 200 pounds.

Kuzmenko wasn’t having any normal plain waffles. Like all of us, he tends to pig out on his sweets–adding layer after layer of strawberries, Nutella and bananas.

“Waffles are not good for me,” he said. “I like (them), but (they’re) not good for me. This summer, (the) rules for me (were): No chocolate, no Nutella, no ice cream in my freezer. You want ice cream, then go to the market. But I (stayed) home.”

With a little help from his newfound weight loss, the 27-year-old Kuzmenko looks to be even more ready for his second season in the NHL. Be on the lookout for a breakout season for the future star winger out of Russia because he is going to become a household name.
