Alex Tuch might be the biggest X-Factor of the 2025 NHL Offseason, and I’m not sure he even realizes it. While Tuch could opt to re-sign with his hometown Sabres, he shouldn’t if he ever wants to be back on a winning team any time soon.
Here’s the bottom line. Tuch is an impending free agent who will earn $4.75 million in the final year of his contract. At 50% retained, that’s a dangerous asset on the trade market for any team. Here’s the kicker… if Tuch’s smart he dictates the whole trade by telling teams I really want to sign with team X.
Although his trade targets board already dropped, Frank Seravalli reported that essentially the entire roster in Buffalo is pissed, and guys like Tuch could enter the trade market.
Tuch, 29, posted 36 goals and 31 assists last season for the Sabres. Having a +16 rating on that team is no easy feat. A guy who blocks shots, too, and plays on both special teams units. Tuch makes sense for pretty much any team looking for a scoring punch. It should really be about what makes sense for Tuch as this can be a sort of trade and extend thing.
A return to Vegas? What about the Rangers or Devils, so that he still stays on the East Coast? Time will tell. The only thing clear is that it no longer feels like a lock that Tuch will just put up with the losing in Buffalo.
Poopypants mode… activated.
