The nation’s top recruit for next season, A.J. Dybantsa, a BYU commit, is expected to be the No. 1 pick ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft, barring something unforeseen.
Earlier this week, he traveled to Paris, France, to watch the NBA’s Global Games between the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs. France is home to former No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, who’s quickly becoming one of the best bigs in the sport and reaching the level many thought he would.
Dybantsa could be trying to recruit himself to San Antonio as well, hinting to ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst that he wouldn’t mind playing with the 7-foot-5 French superstar.
“I think Victor is just ridiculous; the things he does are just crazy,” Dybansta said, according to Windhorst. “I just think we would’ve been a crazy duo. Now the odds of that happening are very slim. But I mean, it was just a thought that came up in my mind when he got drafted. But you never know.”
Windhorst noted that Dybantsa told ESPN that “he would like the Spurs to draft him next year so they can pair up.” I know we haven’t seen Dybantsa play a second of college basketball yet, but if you’ve just glanced at his high school tape, you could see how intriguing of a fit that would be.
San Antonio could own up to three first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, which is stacked; it could also own up to two first-round picks next season as well. As the 6-foot-9 teenager noted, there’s a slim chance that the two could play together barring something completely unforeseen. This also makes me wonder how much the two have talked with one another about potentially playing together.
Chickster may be the only human being on Earth that would think that Dybantsa’s a future Spur. But he’s also done the same with LeBron James‘ great great-great-grandchildren in like 2075.
