A number of stars within AEW are reportedly pushing for President Tony Khan to bring a recently released WWE Superstar to the company.
On Sept. 21, WWE released over 20 wrestlers from their roster due to the TKO merger with the UFC under their new parent company Endeavor. Among the names released were former World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler, Mustafa Ali–who was booked for a match against Dominik Mysterio at NXT No Mercy on Sept. 30–and former Intercontinental Champion Shelton Benjamin.
Benjamin was the name that caught a lot of people’s attention within All Elite Wrestling, as a recent report from Fightful Select (subscription required) has claimed that a number of AEW stars have been pushing for Shelton Benjamin to join the company since his release was confirmed.
The report also suggested that this urge to sign Benjamin wasn’t a recent thing either, as rumors of him being released earlier this year prompted people within AEW to do the same thing then.
It isn’t just people in AEW who want to wrestle Benjamin who are pushing for his arrival, either. Fightful Select’s report suggested that the former WWE Superstar’s wealth of experience in the business has led to a separate group of people in All Elite Wrestling wishing Benjamin join as a producer or coach.
The idea behind this is so the company will eventually have enough producers to put together one match per show, rather than having to juggle numerous responsibilities.
Benjamin won’t be arriving in AEW in the immediate future at least, as his WWE release came with the standard 90-day non-compete clause, meaning that the earliest he could show his face at any wrestling event (not just AEW) would be in the last two weeks of Dec. 2023.
