In AEW Battle of the Belts, every match is a title match. This is the third time the event has taken place — all three coming in 2022. With the show being only one hour long, it’s nonstop action from bell to bell. This Battle of the Belts was interesting, so if you missed it, here’s my review and the results.
I found this match to be refreshing. Wardlow has been so dominant in his AEW career, especially after becoming an official AEW wrestler. He has destroyed every opponent he’s gone up against, but this match was different. Jay Lethal got in some offense and the match went back and forth for the most part. Wardlow looked strong as always and Lethal showed how high his IQ is in the ring. We were teased with Wardlow trying to powerbomb the over 7-foot tall Satnam Singh. Wardlow was attacked before he could complete the move, but it is definitely something fans want to see in the future. I’m not sure where either man goes from here. Wardlow is going to need a feud for AEW All Out, so that needs to start sooner rather than later.
Result: Wardlow (c) def. Jay Lethal
Both of these women showed why they are some of the best wrestlers in the women’s division. Thunder Rosa and Jamie Hayter both looked really strong. Hayter definitely had the power advantage, but Rosa had the speed. They had good chemistry, which made the match seamless. This was one of Hayter’s best matches in AEW. Also, it was reported that Hayter suffered a broken nose during the match. She showed everyone that is she one of the most underrated wrestlers on the roster. Nevertheless, Thunder Rosa was able to overcome the odds and retain her title. The problem is now she is just about out of challenges for the title. With AEW All Out about a month away, they need to figure out a longer feud for her to give her the match at All Out.
Result: Thunder Rosa (c) def. Jamie Hayter
This match was as good as one would imagine. Takeshita is one of the best rising stars in the world. Claudio finally overcame the hump and proved he is world championship material in his first title defense, and it was an incredible match. Both men looked really strong and got to showcase their skills in front of a huge audience. Takeshita is a star in Japan but has been wrestling in the United States to get more eyes on him. He has impressed with every match he has competed in, and this might have been his best. The match went back and forth, but Claudio prevailed as champion. The match was technical, fast-paced, and physical. It had something for everyone. Hopefully, these men will get to meet down the line again and put on another great match.
Result: Claudio Castagnoli (c) def. Konosuke Takeshita
