The NBA’s TV deal with ESPN and TNT expires in 2025. We’re currently in a negotiating window to figure out what will happen next. NBA commissioner Adam Silver wisely commented on the decline of cable and how it’s impacting the league moving forward.
“We recognize that, in some ways, the decline of cable has disproportionately impacted the NBA,” Silver told Kendall Baker of Yahoo Sports AM . “Our young audience isn’t subscribing to cable, and those fans aren’t finding our games.
“There are still roughly 65 million homes in America that are consuming sports in a very traditional way, and even more people on network TV. Is that declining? Yes. Is that going away anytime soon? I don’t believe so,” Silver admitted. “So we want to be on all of those platforms.”
The decline of cable needs to be taken seriously. It’s why ESPN is dying and had to have a massive round of layoffs. That cable number will only continue to decline as more and more people embrace streaming. Heading into the next TV deal, Silver needs to keep that in mind. Will brands like Amazon, Apple, Netflix, etc step up and try to land deals with the league? It’s going to be fascinating to see what happens on that end.
Personally, I think the NHL has the right approach. All of the games can be found on ESPN+ . We know exactly how to find every single game on the schedule. That’s what the NBA needs to do in a perfect world. Not saying it has to be ESPN but it needs to find a provider that fans know will cast every single game.
