Adam Duvall Fractures Wrist

The Boston Red Sox lineup took a hit in Detroit on Sunday when Adam Duvall came up injured after making a sliding attempt to catch a fly ball. On Monday, X-Rays revealed that the slugger has a fractured wrist.

Duvall lands on the 10-day IL for now, but the fracture could keep Duvall out for several weeks, according to manager Alex Cora. Bobby Dalbec will be called up to replace Duvall’s spot.

“If there’s going to be a procedure needed, we don’t know,” Cora said. “He’s going for more tests, and we’ll know more soon. It’s a fracture, though, so it’s going to be weeks.”

Not many expected Duvall to have the season he’s currently having. The 34-year-old is in his 10th season in the league, his first with the Red Sox. Although having only played in nine games so far, Duvall has been balling out in a Red Sox uniform. The right-hander has 15 hits in only 33 at-bats. He’s driven in 14 RBIs, which is currently good for the MLB league lead. Duvall has hit four home runs and has a ridiculous (but unsustainable) 304 OPS+. He signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the club this offseason.

Unexpected Hot Streak

“It’s interesting, because a few weeks ago not too many people thought he was going to be a big blow,” Cora said.

Cora is definitely right about this. No one really expected this high of play from Duvall, who struggled at the plate in 2022. Maybe more notably, he struggled to stay on the field in 2022, only playing 86 games for the Braves.

Duvall was having a career revitalization as a veteran player. In his 10 seasons, Duvall has a claim to two World Series teams. One with the 2014 San Francisco Giants where he only played 28 games. The other was with the 2021 Atlanta Braves, where he was acquired at the trade deadline and hit 16 home runs for the Braves down the stretch. He was a key part of that Braves team.

Life without Duvall won’t be fun for the Sox for the next few weeks. Hopefully, Duvall can continue his hot streak when he returns.
