Penn State EDGE Abdul Carter, who is in the mix to be the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has a stress reaction in his right foot and is contemplating surgery, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The talented pass rusher posted a stellar year, finishing with 12 sacks in what was his first true season as an edge rusher. He received testing this morning which uncovered the injury.
“There are mixed opinions on whether he needs surgery, and we will figure that out in the near future,” Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus said Wednesday night in Indianapolis, site of the NFL’s annual scouting combine.
Adam Schefter went on to tweet:
“Option 1 for Abdul Carter would be to have the pre-emptive surgery, have a screw inserted in his right foot, and be expected back in eight weeks, Rosenhaus said. Option 2 for Carter would be to bypass the surgery, conduct his pro day and prove to NFL teams that he doesn’t need it.“
“Option 2 for Carter would be to bypass the surgery, conduct his pro day and prove to NFL teams that he doesn’t need it.”
The eight-week recovery timeframe isn’t ideal, as it means he would not be able to work out at his pro day as well as missing out on the 2025 NFL Combine, but this isn’t the worst thing in the world. Abdul Carter is still at the top of my big board even with this injury, and should 100 percent be in play to be taken by Tennessee this April in the draft.
The Carter news shouldn’t ring too many alarm bells, but it is certainly something to monitor whichever way he decides to take his recovery., especially with the lingering shoulder issue that kept him out of the combine this year. Surgery or no surgery, Carter will hear his name called early in the 2025 NFL Draft and should be an immediate difference-maker at the next level.
