In a similar fashion to Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers has joined the young and talented New York Jets for his 19th NFL season, and has already given high praise to budding wide receiver Garrett Wilson after just recently arriving in New York.
Wilson, who wears No. 17, was compared by Aaron Rodgers to another receiver he has played with that also wears a No. 17: Davante Adams.
“He’s a talented guy. I threw him a pass today and just kind of turned and was like ‘wow.’ . . . His ability to kind of get in and out of his breaks,” Aaron Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show. “There’s another 17 (Davante Adams) I played with for a long time who does it better than anybody. The explosiveness in and out of breaks, the 17 here (Wilson), is pretty similar.”
While Aaron Rodgers may just be trying to increase Wilson’s confidence, he is not the type of person to give unwarranted praise. Rodgers has stated before that the best players he has played with are Charles Woodson and Adams. Now a receiver in Vegas, Adams is still easily among the top-5 players at his position, if not the best.
Wilson tallied 83 receptions, 1,103 yards and four touchdowns during his 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign — doing so with less-than-average quarterbacks in the backfield the whole season. The addition of Rodgers should only improve Wilson’s stats, potentially enough that Wilson could emerge as a legitimate WR1, not just a rookie sensation.
Comparing Wilson to Adams after just one season is definitely a reach. Whether or not Aaron Rodgers is correct will be proven this season.
Robert Saleh has made a significant culture change in New York since being hired as the Jets’ head coach. Their defense emerged as a young, fast and ferocious unit throughout last season. The same cannot be said for the offense.
Apart from starting Zach Wilson, Mike White and Joe Flacco at quarterback, the offensive production plummeted with the loss of running back Breece Hall. Hall had scored touchdowns in four consecutive weeks before tearing his ACL in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos. Wilson winning OROY was the one bright spot for Jets offense that missed the playoffs, in part due to lack of offensive production.
The arrival of Rodgers has completely changed the Jets’ offensive outlook for the upcoming season. Along with the signing of wide receivers Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman, the Jets’ offense should be much more explosive; Hall picking up where left off last season will also help matters significantly.
Despite residing in the very stacked AFC and AFC East, the Jets are looking poised to make some kind of playoff push this season if they remain healthy.
