New Orleans Saints 2019 NFL Training Camp Preview

New Orleans Saints
After back to back heartbreaking years in a row, do the New Orleans Saints have what it takes to get back to the promise land? That’s the question worth asking as the team reports to training camp (AP/Chris Tilley)

They might want to think about renaming the city of New Orleans, heartbreak city. Is anything more brutal than watching those back to back playoff losses? The Minnesota Miracle was one thing. Topping it off with the Non-pass interference is another. How can you even rebound from that? They better find a way because Drew Brees does not have much time left. Let’s take a look at what the New Orleans Saints will bring to the table as they open up training camp.

3 Position Battles To Watch:

Backup Quarterback: Taysom Hill, Teddy Bridgewater

The Saints love Taysom Hill. It feels like he is always on the field. Teddy Bridgewater has starter experience and probably deserves another shot to run a franchise. Here’s my question. If and when Drew Brees is done or gets hurt, which guy gets the job? Isn’t it possible that New Orleans views Hill as more than just a gimmick? New Orleans gave up a third round pick and just handed Bridgewater a new contract. How is he not next in line? This is fascinating.

Backup Running Back: Devine Ozigbo, Latavius Murray, Buck Allen

Mark Ingram was really important for this team. I’m sure the Saints don’t want to burn Alvin Kamara out either so this spot is actually a salient concern. The new options aren’t very enticing. Latavius Murray is probably the favorite who did a decent job with the Vikings last year. Murray rushed for 578 yards on 141 carries (4.1 YPC) and 6 touchdowns. Devine Ozigbo might be a sleeper to watch who was productive at Nebraska.

Tight End: Alize Mack, Jared Cook, Josh Hill, Dan Arnold

Take a second to think about this. Are we sure Jared Cook is just going to get handed the tight end job? Are we positive? Jared Cook had a career year with the Raiders that came out of nowhere. What if it was a one year wonder? Rookie Alize Mack from Notre Dame has some potential too. The Saints love Dan Arnold too for some reason.

Ready To Breakout: Marcus Davenport

For the record, I don’t believe in Marcus Davenport. This is more for the Saints. The better hope this guy breaks out because they gave up every draft pick known to mankind for him. Davenport has to be better. Plain and simple.

Rookie To Watch: Erik McCoy

The Saints didn’t have a large rookie class after giving up every pick known to mankind for Marcus Davenport. Erik McCoy steps right in as the starting center. New Orleans hasn’t had a reliable one since Max Unger. If that isn’t something to watch, then I don’t know what is.

Fantasy Sleeper: Tre’Quan Smith

Calling for help. Signed, Michael Thomas. Tre’Quan Smith has an opportunity to emerge as the clear number two receiver. Be Tyler Boyd. That’s all you have to do, Tre’Quan. Be Tyler Boyd. There’s already an AJ Green on this team. Be Tyler Boyd, Tre’Quan.
