The Kansas City Chiefs were probably an offside penalty away from winning the Super Bowl, or at least advancing there. The ghost of Dee Ford is gone and since has been traded. Still, the Chiefs appear to be headed in the wrong direction. The defense somehow looks worse on paper. Tyreek Hill is also a real question mark to even play this year. KC needs to take advantage of the rookie contract window they have with Patrick Mahomes. Let’s dive into some key questions the Chiefs have heading into training camp.

3 Position Battles To Watch:

Safety: Juan Thornhill, Daniel Sorensen

Tyrann Mathieu has one spot under wraps. The other is up for grabs. We have Juan Thornhill who is a rookie from Virginia. Then we have vet Daniel Sorensen. They are really on opposite ends of the spectrum. Sorensen is more of a strong safety and is limited athletically. Thornhill is more of a corner and pops as an athlete. It’s an intriguing battle but the higher upside play is Thornhill.

Linebacker: Anthony Hitchens, Darron Lee

Anthony Hitchens was a flop free agent pickup from Dallas. He couldn’t haven’t been much worse. Darron Lee is also a flop. The Jets gave him away after signing CJ Mosley. The problem is one of them has to start. This epitomizes this defense. It’s more ugly than good.

Edge: Alex Okafor, Breeland Speaks, Emmanuel Ogbah

The Chiefs overpaid for Frank Clark but at least they aren’t disastrous at edge anymore. Losing Dee Ford and Justin Houston in the same offseason is a disaster. The spare parts will make up the rest of the group. I would think that Emmanuel Ogbah has to be a huge favorite to land the starting job. In 3 years, Ogbah has 12.5 sacks. That isn’t elite by any measure but it’s the best the Chiefs can ask for at this point. I think Ogbah has more in him too.

Ready To Breakout: Charvarius Ward

Charvarius Ward has one of the weirder climbs in a long time. Ward was signed as an undrafted player by the Cowboys. Ward was traded to the Chiefs. Weird move to trade for an undrafted player. He wasn’t a factor basically all year and then started the final two games of the season. Ward was electric. In the playoff game against the Colts, Ward broke up 4 passes and the Colts went 0-9 on 3rd down after attacking him all day. It was wildly impressive. Ward might truly be a diamond in the rough.

Rookie To Watch: Mecole Hardman

We still don’t know if and when Tyreek Hill will play. Sammy Watkins never plays either. Mecole Hardman has to be the deep guy. He’s going to get a lot of chances with Patrick Mahomes. Hardman comes from a runheavy Georgia offense so I’m not sure anyone has a clear idea just how good Hardman is. He certainly had his moments as a Bulldog but never put up super productive seasons. Talk about a fantasy sleeper woah!

Fantasy Sleeper: Carlos Hyde

Andy Reid always seems to produce quality running backs. How the hell did Damien Williams get so good? Let’s not sleep on Carlos Hyde. What if he comes in and rushes for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns? I wouldn’t say that is impossible. I think Hyde could steal a lot of short touchdowns. With this Chiefs offense, both backs should get work.
