Andrew McCutchen Out For Season With Torn ACL

It took $50 million to bring Andrew McCutchen to Philadelphia this offseason. Unfortunately, year one of a three year pact has not gone as planned. McCutchen, 32, will miss the remainder of the 2019 season via a torn left ACL. McCutchen will be placed on the 60 Day IL for the rest of the season.

Matt Gelb of the Athletic was the first to report the news:

This is not the way I want to see any player go down. It’s not. It flat out sucks. McCutchen is a well-respected player in the sport and I wish him a speedy recovery. However, this deal never made any sense for the Phillies. In 262 plate appearances, McCutchen turned in a .256/.378/.457 line with 10 homers, 12 doubles, one triple, two steals, and an NL-best 43 walks. Those numbers are solid. No doubt. Definitely not worth $15 million per year.

To the Phillies credit, they have not messed around trying to find a replacement. Jay Bruce was acquired from the Mariners. Adam Haseley was promoted to the big leagues from AAA Lehigh Valley. Haseley was a former first round pick in 2017. Nick Williams is still parked in AAA for now too as an option to call up as well.

The Phillies continue to hold their first place lead… for now. Make no mistake about it, the Braves are coming and they have more assets than anybody to add to the roster. Right now we are looking at an outfield of Jay Bruce in left, Scott Kingery in center, and Bryce Harper in right. It is what it is. It will be interesting to see where Philly continues to look for upgrades.
