Frank Reich Defends Psycho Fourth Down Play Call In Overtime To Lose Game

There’s a fine line between brilliant and crazy. Then there’s a line between risky and psycho. Splitting 9’s in blackjack is risky. Splitting 10’s in a downright psycho move. Splitting 10’s is exactly what Frank Reich did. Enter Reich’s delusional mind here for a second. There are 27 seconds left and it’s a fourth down and 4 yards to go at their own 43-yard line. Punt the ball and we grab a tie, no big deal. Except Frank Reich thought he had the same nuts that Doug Pederson has and it failed. Instead of tying, the decision cost the Colts the game and Houston kicked an easy field goal to win.

Reich had his postgame press conference and said he didn’t regret the psycho move to go for it:

“I’ll just address it now,” Reich said, via Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star. “We’re not playing to tie. We’re going for it 10 times out of 10.”

I get it, ties suck. No one wants to tie. It’s a whole different conversation when you’re a rookie head coach making psycho moves to just give games away. The most hilarious thing is that no one had timeouts either. They threw a 6-yard pass and it failed. Even if they convert the route, they still need to get 20 more yards with virtually no time on the clock. You still probably tie even if they convert the fourth down! Frank, my guy, just take the night off because you need a mental health day.

The good news for the Colts is they probably won’t lose the locker room. Andrew Luck is one of those people that is so smart that he’s actually dumb. He loved the decision to go for it and I’m not surprised.

“Love it,” the quarterback said. “Everybody in that locker room liked that — no, LOVED that. Loved that. We can get behind that.”
