David Wright Interested In Joining Mets Front Office

David Wright holds a lot of the New York Mets franchise hitting records. Once the 2018 season ends, Wright will have put on the Mets uniform for the last time. However, that doesn’t mean Wright wants to go away for good. His playing career has essentially been over for a long time but Wright still wants to remain with the organization.

Andy Martino of SNY had the following:

“On Tuesday evening, I asked Wright if he would like to be a part of the front office next year as a special assistant or advisor to a GM or president of baseball operations. He nodded.

“I’d love to stay involved,” Wright said. “I love being around the game. I obviously love the organization. So I think I could provide value.”

Martino also added that Wright has no interest in becoming a broadcaster, coach, or manager. This sort of makes sense considering Wright has been rehabbing at the Mets spring training facility for about two years. Wright has enjoyed mentoring young players at Port St. Lucie and could serve as some sort of a special advisor down in Florida if that interests him.

2018 Top MLB Prospects Going Into Spring Training

What’s interesting is that the Mets are going to be looking for a new gm. Sandy Alderson has stepped away from dealing with cancer treatments so maybe Wright will be promoted to some sort of assistant role right away depending on who gets the job. Omar Minaya, John Ricco, and J.P. Riccardi have been sharing the role since Alderson stepped away but I’m sure the Mets want to put one guy in charge.

Wright, 35, will end his playing career with a lifetime average of .296 and 242 career home runs.
