Kam Chancellor is hanging up his cleats and calling it quits from the NFL. A tragic neck injury has forced the talented safety to retire from the NFL. The entire Legion of Boom secondary is now all but gone except for Earl Thomas and even he is rumored to be on the trade block with Dallas interested in his services. We wish Chancellor well with his life after football.

Chancellor announced his retirement via Twitter:

Chancellor has said earlier this offseason that he planned to play this season if he was medically cleared. It appears that maybe he received some bad news that maybe it would have been risky to play. Anything that deals with neck injuries are something you can’t mess around with. Chancellor, 30, played all 8 years with Seattle after being a late round pick from Virginia Tech.

Contractually he will still earn $6.8 million because he was on Seattle’s roster in February. The Seahawks will still save $7.5 million this season with the retirement. Chancellor will go down as one of the better pure strong safeties in the league earning four Pro Bowl selections during his playing career. He was also a big factor in Seattle’s Super Bowl victory in 2016 when they had the number one defense in the league and put a hurting on Peyton Manning.

It’s a shame Chancellor had to walk away from the game so soon. He was still at the top of his game prior to the injury. In 2016. Chancellor had a Pro Football Focus grade of 91.2. He then recorded a grade of 88.5 in 2017. Without Chancellor, it’s tough to like Seattle’s chances this upcoming season with a depleted defense that isn’t nearly the same.
