Lane Johnson: Chip Kelly Focused On The Wrong Things With Eagles

News flash! People in Philadelphia still hate Chip Kelly. (Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports)

Talented right tackle, Lane Johnson, had some harsh words for his former head coach, Chip Kelly. Lane Johnson is flying high after the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl essentially by shipping off any player associated with the Chip Kelly era (DeMarco Murray, Byron Maxwell, Kiko Alonso, and others). The Chip Kelly era ended poorly because Johnson claims that his former head coach focused on the wrong things.

“We major in sports science, which is good thing — we still do it here. But I think we kind of went overboard with that. I think a good way to put it is we majored in the minors instead of focusing on some of the main points that we needed to,” Johnson said on Steve Austin’s podcast, via Philly.com.

Johnson also wasn’t happy with the personnel decisions Kelly made. He mentioned specifically that players were not happy when LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson were sent out of town. In the end, Johnson is probably happy with the way things turned out with Howie Roseman building the best overall roster in the sport.

NFC East 2018 NFL Draft Grades: Howie Roseman Shows Why He’s The Best

“It was definitely exciting whenever he first came in, and we did some good things,” Johnson said. “Then we start getting rid of our best players. You’ve got DeSean Jackson, who can outrun everyone on the field. You’ve got Shady McCoy, who’s going to be one of the best running backs of all time. You just get rid of those guys just like that, and you set a tone. Players didn’t really like that.”

SHOP VENDETTA MERCH!

To think how fast the Eagles turned thing around in two short years in frankly hard to believe. The scariest part of all is that Nick Foles would be the one to win them a Super Bowl who was drafted the year before Kelly arrived in Philadelphia.
