Red Sox DFA Ryan Brasier

In a move that surprises no one, the Red Sox have finally DFA’d reliever Ryan Brasier. Following the 9-1 loss to St. Louis today where Brasier gave up three runs in 2.1 innings, the Red Sox finally saw enough. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe has reported that the Sox intend to designate Brasier for assignment.

It never made sense to reserve a 40 man spot for Brasier. Never made sense yet Chaim Bloom did it anyway. Use whatever name you want to. Noah Song, Jeter Downs, Thad Ward, any of the young players Bloom gave away for nothing just to protect a bum reliever that stunk it up. The worst part about it is that Brasier was terrible last year sporting a 5.78 ERA a year ago.

The Red Sox will now have 10 days to either trade Brasier, release him, or place him on waivers. If he clears waivers, he could be assigned to the minor leagues, although he would first need to clear outright waivers.

Prior to his time with the Boston Red Sox, Ryan Brasier had spent several seasons pitching in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He signed with the team in 2013 after being released by the Los Angeles Angels

Brasier, 35, wasn’t always terrible. He was a key part of the team’s World Series championship run in 2018, posting a 1.60 ERA in 34 appearances. Brasier will always be remembered fondly for that run in 18. The problem was he was never really ever productive afterward. It’s a move that should have been done three years ago.
