Discord to Soon Require Users to Change Usernames
Another major policy change from Discord will soon be upon us. The company is aiming at reforming usernames and how they will function and be presented. This, however, is just a part of an overall remodeling of the app’s infrastructure.
So what’s this change to usernames exactly?
In a recent blog, Discord outlined all the major changes they were making for usernames. Under these new changes, Discord will be removing the traditional four-digit authentication codes that users have had for years now. These codes will now be replaced with an entirely unique username. If someone already has that username, then users will have to find a different one.
The changes will also come with another display name. This one will be the more common version of the two that other users will see. It will be displayed in direct messages, on servers and over voice chat. In truth, Discord seems to be taking a page out of Valve Software’s playbook, with Valve having used a similar program on Steam for over nearly two decades now.
Both new usernames and new display names are required to only use numbers zero through nine, a handful of special characters and only Latin characters. However, the restriction in letters leaves out users who would prefer Cyrillic, Arabic, Asian or other types of lettering for their usernames. So, we might just see Discord update these rules soon.
When will this change happen?
Discord only announced these changes on May 3, so it is currently unknown when these changes will come into effect. The blog post makes no mention of a release date, so these changes could be coming whenever — next month, next week or perhaps even tomorrow. We’ll have to just wait and see where these changes go.
