Calgary Flames fire Darryl Sutter after disappointing season

After finishing with only 93 points in 83 games this season, the Calgary Flames have decided to fire head coach Darryl Sutter, the team announced Monday.

“On behalf of ownership and all Calgary Flames fans, we want to thank Darryl (Sutter) for his cumulative years of service to the Calgary Flames and to the community at large,” said CSEC President and CEO, John Bean.

(All quotes are from the Calgary Flames’ Press Release).

With high expectations coming into this season, the Flames were expected to be one of the NHL’s best teams. But that fell short when the season approached. Johnny Gaudreau signed a massive deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets and they traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. These were both huge reasons why the Flames tanked in the standings compared to last season, but their roster was still very good.

At the end of the day, the Flames needed a new scenario following their missing of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hockey is all about business and winning. When you have a roster like the Flames and miss the postseason, something isn’t going well, and it starts with Sutter’s coaching.

Sutter coached for the Flames for three seasons during which he found success. He quickly became the most polarizing figure for Calgary, but with poor management and decision-making, he got the boot. Sutter still had two years remaining on his newly signed two-year $8 million contract extension.

The former Jack Adams award winner will look to be signed by a new team this offseason as his coaching career is far from over. Sutter has coached over 1,200 NHL games with a record of 736-530-101.
