It’s a deep cornerback class and Clark Phillips is a name that’s very under the radar right now. Utah has put some great secondary guys into the league but this guy might be the best one. Let’s go over the Clark Phillips 2023 NFL Draft profile and talk about why you should be a believer in the Utah cornerback.
You might think of Utah as a place that finds gems. Guys who were overlooked. Well, that’s not Clark Phillips. This was a four star recruit who was listed as the 6th overall corner nationally in the 2020 class. California boy that could have easily ended up with a school that’s more well known nationally. Don’t always be fooled by the helmet. The helmet is a good indicator but you have to do your homework here too.
The stock report notes were all positive. Most notably being when Utah beat USC in the Pac 12 Championship game. Yes, Caleb Williams got hurt but it wasn’t the whole story. Jordan Addison got open all year but he didn’t when matched up against Phillips. It’s Phillips that really won Utah the game.
On the smaller side which is why he should go in the late second / early third round portion of the draft. 5-foot-9, 184 with short arms. Going to be an awesome nickel corner for someone. Can play outside if you need him to. The guy is tough. 4.51 is more than enough speed. 18 bench press reps shows he’s strong and is a worker. Six interceptions last year. Really good at playing the ball.
No complaints about the movement skills at the Combine if you were curious. Checked that box just fine. Three year starter that likes to tackle and scored four career interception returns. Instincts are good. The guy can just flat out play.
On day two of the draft, Clark Phillips is absolutely someone I’m targeting.
