When you think of plus tackle prospects, you don’t think he hails from Syracuse. Well, Matthew Bergeron is here to change that. Bergeron has very nice upside and should garner some attention in a tackle class that has nice talent. What does his draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.
Bergeron was a three-star recruit from Montreal, Canada in the 2019 cycle. He’s been playing since his freshman year, featuring in 44 games in college, logging over 2,500 snaps and allowing just 13 sacks — five of those sacks came in his senior year. He earned second-team All-ACC last year and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2020.
Trey had one comment on Bergeron’s combine performance, saying he looked good. That’s all. Here are the rest of his offensive line notes.
If Bergeron finds his way to a team that heavily involves the run game in their scheme, he will thrive. Bergeron made a name for himself blocking for Sean Tucker these last few years. Truthfully, I think he might be better suited to make a move inside to Guard.
This man has some nasty to him. Every time he’s engaged in a block, he wants to dominate. His footwork in run block is among the best in the class. He’s like a rocket off the snap, always getting to his man first and finding his way to the second level. He can get out and move well laterally. When you’re in his grasp, it’s game over. Big ol’ strong hands.
Is complete liability in pass pro too harsh? Maybe. But those sacks in his last season are a concern. His shorter wingspan doesn’t help his case if he chooses to stay at tackle. Gets too high in pass pro, has to work on keeping his pad level cleaner. But arguably his biggest red flag is how often he drops his head. He will be doomed if he doesn’t fix that.
I quite like Matthew Bergeron. If I am drafting him, I have it in my plans to kick him inside. I have a top-75 grade on Bergeron as he has the tools to become an above-average to plus starter over time. I think he’d benefit from landing on a team with a really great anchor on offense to learn from.
