Sony to Acquire Firewalk Studios

Amidst the ongoing struggle between Microsoft and Sony over the potential acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, Sony has opted to go on and buy out some companies as well, with the PlayStation giant buying Firewalk Studios, Sony announced Thursday. Firewalk and Sony have a history with each other, with the two beginning a partnership back in 2021 to develop a AAA title for the PlayStation 5.

What Exactly is Firewalk Studios?

The company was first founded in 2018 by former developers of games like Halo, Destiny, and Apex Legends. It was originally a subsidiary of another company named ProbablyMonsters. While Firewalk hasn’t made any games yet, the partnership between them and ProbablyMonsters with Sony will be that first game when it is finished.

What The Acquisition Means For The Two:

While Firewalk is now a part of Sony, work on their AAA title will still continue. Studio head, Tony Hsu, and game director Ryan Ellis expressed gratification to the support both Sony and ProbablyMonsters have given FireWalk over the years.

“Building a new studio at scale has been an incredibly exhilarating and relentlessly daunting task. Fortunately, we’ve been supported by great partners throughout,” said Hsu and Ellis. “ProbablyMonsters helped turbocharge us in setting up the studio, and Sony has been supporting our project and our creative vision from the beginning.”

It’s clear that Sony and Firewalk will continue working on the latter’s new title. Just what that title is and what it will be about are so far unknown, however. But it must be a promising one with the support the studio has shown.

What The Acquisition Means For The Gaming Industry:

While the war of acquisitions between Microsoft and its rival continues, the Firewalk purchase is really only a sideshow to the Microsoft/Activision-Blizzard attempts, though it is a sign of Sony’s growing desire to shore up what’s theirs in the face of the massive potential shift in the industry.
