Atari Purchases Several Video Game IPs
Atari was once the mainstay of the video game world, the titan of the industry all the way back in the 1970s and early 1980s. Those days have long since passed, however, through it all, the company is still kicking and even expanding, with Atari having just purchased the the property rights to over a hundred PC and console games from the 1980s and 1990s.
What Did Atari Just Buy?
The company’s broad swath of newly bought IPs includes many that were quite popular in their day but have since fallen by the wayside, including games like Hardball, Demolition Racer, Bubsy, and other titles not yet listed officially by the company. But the acquisitions are just the beginning.
What Does The Company Want to do With These Games?
Atari has outlined several plans and options for the future of these retro titles, with modern distributions, merchandise and making new games under these titles all being on the table. In a statement, the company expressed this as a step in a “multi-year effort to transform the company.”
Is This The Start of a Comeback For Atari?
Atari’s relevance within the gaming world has been minimal for decades now. The company barely survived the 1983 video game industry crash, so news coming from them, or even about them, is pretty rare these days.
The talk of this being apart of a “multi-year effort to transform the company” certainly raises some eyebrows, but is also a good sign for the heath of the company. Perhaps all this is a new start for one of gaming’s biggest pioneers. Maybe this is just a fluke and nothing will come of it, but it is a sign of life from Atari, that much is certain.
