Matt McGloin: Drew Allar is on ‘another level talent-wise’

After longtime Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford reached the end of his career, the Nittany Lions are looking to replace him — and boy have they. Former five-star prospect Drew Allar has taken the throne as Penn State’s starter and he has heads turning. Former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has given Allar some high praise, according to 247Sports.

Matt McGloin’s view on Drew Allar

“The expectations for him are to be able to make the throws that Sean Clifford could not,” McGloin said on SiriusXM Radio, via 247Sports. “That’s nothing against Sean Clifford, because what he did throughout his career was phenomenal. He’s won a lot of big games, he’s thrown for a lot of touchdowns. He’s thrown for a lot of yardage. I don’t think anybody has gotten more criticism than Sean Clifford over the past four years or so, and he’s done a lot for the program.”

“But now, as you mentioned, you’re taking it to another level talent-wise with what Drew Allar brings to the table,” McGloin said, via 247Sports.We saw flashes of it in what you would call garbage time a year ago. The ability to throw the football with velocity, the size, the strength — it’s all there and for him now, when you look at the 12-game schedule, everybody is really focusing on two and that’s Ohio State and Michigan.”

“The expectations for this kid is to be able to lead Penn State to victories in both of those games,” McGloin said, via 247sports. “People aren’t going to be pleased with just beating Michigan State or beating Iowa or Indiana or Illinois, or whoever it may be on their schedule this year for 2023. The expectation for Drew Allar is to beat Ohio State, to beat Michigan. To take Penn State to the Big Ten Championship game and be successful.

Allar’s time at Penn State

Allar is certainly a big upgrade over Clifford. In his time at Penn State, Clifford never secured a Big Ten championship and got swamped in multiple bowl games. As Garrett said in the tagged article, Clifford isn’t a winner. Moving on from Clifford, Allar has been impressive in the little time he has played. Allar has thrown for four touchdowns, almost 400 passing yards, and around 60% completion.
