It’s a deep running back draft, but what about Travis Dye? Let’s take a look at the USC transfer’s 2023 NFL Draft Profile! (Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports)

Travis Dye 2023 NFL Draft Profile

How much is there to really say about Travis Dye? After spending a good chunk of his time at Oregon, Dye transferred for one shot to raise his stock in the new revamped Lincoln Riley unit with the Trojans at USC. Did it work? That’s what we’re here to talk about. This is your 2023 NFL Draft Profile on Travis Dye!

The positive is that Dye comes from a football family. He’s the youngest of four. All of which play football including an older brother Troy. Yes, that Troy Dye who is a linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings. So, yes, that part is good. Football bloodlines are there.

I think the thing to like about Dye the most is that he’s scrappy and versatile. Can return kicks. Can pass protect. Can catch the ball out of the backfield. He can do a lot of different things. He’s also proven to be an efficient runner averaging 6.0 yards per carry during his collegiate career.

The problem is I’m not sure Dye is elite at anything. There is a scrappiness there that he fights for extra yardage. I’m just not sure he’s actually talented enough to play at the NFL level. Dye might not even get picked and my have to fight for a roster spot as a pass catching running back.

The other red flag is that Dye likes to cough up the football. Nine fumbles during his four year Oregon career. It’s just never going to be acceptable. If you can’t hang onto the rock, you can’t play. Simple as that.

We didn’t get a 40 time from Dye at the combine. Probably because we all know it would have been underwhelming. Not a super powerful back either at 5-foot-10, 201. Has some wiggle but there is no grease lightning here. In terms of pure movement skills, you’re going to be underwhelmed. In reality, Dye is a transfer to help hold the fort down until Raleek Brown is ready.

Travis Dye probably won’t be picked. It wouldn’t be surprising if he did make a roster but there really isn’t much of a ceiling play here at all. It’s another dime-a-dozen running back that you can pick off the street in Week 10 when an injury occurs on your roster. That’s probably what you’re looking at here.
