Knicks legend Willis Reed passes away at 80 after battle with congestive heart problems

The NBA community has sadly lost a great today. New York Knicks Hall-of-Famer Willis Reed has sadly passed away this morning after a battle with congestive heart problems. Peter Vecsey reported the news via Twitter.

It always pains me to write these types of articles, ones of sports legends passing away. Just around a week ago, the Minnesota Vikings legendary head coach Bud Grant passed away. Now Willis Reed. It is truly saddening as a sports fan to see all of these great people go.

Reed cemented his legacy in the NBA as an all-time great. He was a member of the Knicks from 1964 to 74 and would later retire after his knee injury that sidelined him in 1974-75. The NBA selected Reed for seven all-star appearances over the course of his career. As well as earning Rookie of the Year in 1965. He would also win league MVP in 1970 when he averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds, and two assists on 51% from the field. Along with his individual awards, Reed would achieve two titles with New York in 1970 and 1973 where he won finals MVP in both championship seasons.

He would appear in a total of 728 total NBA games, including playoffs. Across the regular season, Wolf, Reed’s nickname, would average around 19 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists. In the playoffs, Reed averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists.

The NBA community is saddened by the news of the passing of Reed, he will always be remembered in our hearts. May the Knicks legend rest in peace. Prayers go out to his family, friends, and more during this time.
