Panthers Sign Miles Sanders to 4-Year Contract
The Panthers are bringing in former Eagles running back Miles Sanders on a 4-year deal worth $25 million. At only 6.25 million a year, it’s safe to say the Panthers are getting a steal here. Ian Rappaport was among the first to report on the news.
Miles Sanders is coming off of what was by far his best season in the NFL. He rushed for 1269 yards and a career-high 11 TDs. It was easily his best season and it led many people to believe that the Eagles would make an effort to bring the Penn State product back.
But alas the Eagles decided against bringing Miles Sanders back. Most likely for cap reasons and the fact that running back is the most replaceable position in the NFL. But I mean if this is what the Eagles could have brought him back for then I don’t think any fans would have complained.
Now Sanders is no Christian McCaffrey replacement but he is very good in his own right. He doesn’t give you nearly as much receiving upside but as a pure runner, he is still very effective. Now he did benefit from running behind the league’s best offensive line so it’ll be interesting to see how he does behind this Carolina O-line.
But regardless, for the price they brought him in at it really can’t go wrong. The cap hit won’t ever be too significant and he has the chance to play well above his price tag.
It’s been a rather interesting offseason for the Panthers who have traded up for the number one pick while also signing Andy Dalton to serve as a backup for whoever they draft. But this is a move that you can’t really hate on no matter how you look at it.
A pro bowl caliber running back for under $10 million is certainly a steal and the Panthers are sure to get the most out of him. But honestly, I’m surprised Miles Sanders didn’t command more money. I know the value of running backs is at an all-time low but I didn’t think it was like this.
He is sure to be an upgrade for a Panthers running game that was surprisingly effective last year. If they can find their guy at QB this panthers offense can certainly be one to watch out for come next season.
