Mike McGlinchey expected to sign with Broncos

The Denver Broncos are expected to sign right tackle Mike McGlinchey, ESPN NFL reporter Dianna Russini was first to report Monday, the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the deal is expected to be a five-year, $87.5 million deal with over $50 million guaranteed.

McGlinchey’s new deal makes him the 12th-highest paid tackle, on average ($17.5M), in the NFL, including the 5th-highest right tackle behind Ryan Ramczyk, Brian O’Neill, Lane Johnson and Taylor Moton, per Spotrac.

He made $11 million in the final year of his rookie contract last year and has started 69 regular season games in five seasons with San Francisco, in addition to six postseason games.

It is not surprising that the former No. 9 overall pick is headed out of The Bay, however; in a recent interview with KNBR, McGlinchey said the writing for a potential departure “was kind of on the wall,” because neither side to come to terms with a new deal.

“Obviously it’s something that was expected. The writing was kind of on the wall a little bit in that regard,” McGlinchey said, via KNBR. “John and Kyle both had conversations with me before I left the building. It was something we all kind of expected.

“It’s definitely a tough deal. We have a lot of great players in the 49ers organization, which is why we’ve been good for the last five years, and it makes it hard to afford everybody. We have a Hall of Fame (tackle) — and maybe the greatest to play the tackle position — on our team already. It’s hard to imagine them paying top dollar for both.

“It’s been as fun for me as it has been for everybody else,” McGlinchey said. “My family and I are forever grateful for the (49ers’) faithful, the Yorks, John and Kyle, everybody in there. It’s been a hell of a ride and if this is it, I just want to say thank you to everyone.”

San Francisco currently has about $3.8 million in cap space, per Over The Cap, with its highest paid player being left tackle Trent Williams, who carries a 2023 cap-hit of $27.2 million.

It’s been a busy day so far for Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos, who also signed backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham to a two-year, $10 million deal with $5 million guaranteed, as well as guard Ben Powers to a four-year, $52 million deal with $28.5 million guaranteed, per multiple reports.

The deal cannot be officially announced until Wednesday, March 15 at 4:00 p.m. ET, the official start of the new league year. But this is a very good add for Denver, who’s clearly looking to bolster its offensive line that finished top-10 in both pass block and run block win-rate in 2022.
